I will start by saying, when it comes to my own artwork, I am the most unapologetic and brutal critic I know. And I think that goes for most artists out there.
So here’s a Jack Kirby-redo assignment I was given where we had to pick any random comic page illustrated by Jack Kirby and just redo the entire thing. Not reproduce it. I mean, literally redo it. Change it up, draw it in your own style, and improve it in your own way.
Now I can definitely say that this page has a number of flaws and places where I could’ve done better. For instance, panel 2 is a bit off, mainly because of the choice of angle. It was a bad call from the start, but I only really picked up on it when it was finished. Also the storytelling is a bit confusing and I actually think I should’ve stayed truer to Kirby’s storytelling rather than do it my way.
These past months I’ve been really taking a crack at superheroes. Trying to do more DC/Marvel properties which I’m usually hesitant about, namely because I don’t think my style really fits their look. That could be my own insecurity and self-deprecation that lends to that thinking, but regardless I’m not about to indulge it. Regardless, I am not entirely happy with this, I do think I could’ve done this a lot better, which that’s what being an artist is. Always improving and moving forward.
